Washoe County legislators face big changes; will need more time and money to win races
When our Washoe County Democratic legislators met with Executive Board members a few weeks ago, they had some good news and some, well, other news. The good news is that, statewide, Democrats have a good chance of maintaining majorities in the state Assembly and Senate. The "other" news isn't necessarily bad, but rather valuable information about the challenges our Washoe County Democratic legislators face in 2012 due to major changes in their district boundaries. They asked for our help, which they will need more than ever, to get re-elected.
The Reno Gazette-Journal recently ran a full story about the challenges our legislators face in their new districts. Washoe County Dems are encouraged to check it out here.
Once you've had a chance to read it, please reply to this email to say "YES", I want to help re-elect our Democratic legislators. You don't have to live in a Democratic district to help. It's up to all WashoeDEMS to make sure we maintain our Democratic representation in the Nevada Legislature!
Speaking of how you can help...
We need volunteers starting NOW to help call voters who have a new assemblyperson as a result of redistricting.
Next Wednesday, December 14th, Assemblyman Skip Daly will host a Get Out The Caucus Phone Bank at the Washoe County HQ. As you read in the RGJ, Skip's race is going to be one of the most important in all of Northern Nevada and we need your help to get his name out to all his new constituents! So please come down and help us get good Democrats out to participate in the caucuses and help them get to know Skip Daly!
When: Wednesday December 14th
Where: Washoe Dems HQ : 1465 Terminal Way Reno, NV 89502
Time: 4:00pm - 8:00pm

Help legislators by attending your precinct caucus!
Yes, by attending your precinct caucus, you can help elect Democrats up and down the ticket!
We all know President Obama will be the Democratic nominee, but it's still VERY important to attend your caucus for a number of reasons; primarily because it will be the first opportunity in the election year to begin organizing active voters at the grassroots precinct level. And that will help ALL Democrats on the ballot.
So, please plan to attend the caucus in your neighborhood on January 21. And if you'd like to get to know more of your neighbors by serving as your temporary caucus chair, call Kate Wilson at HQ at 323-8683 to volunteer!
Caucusing 101 - It's Fun!
More than 50 WashoeDEMS gathered at HQ Tuesday night to “mockus” and enjoy a holiday potluck.
With just 43 days until January 21, Caucus Day, Katie Wilson, regional caucus director, generated some fun and enthusiasm as she walked through how the caucus will work, from the beginning of set-up at 10 a.m., through the sign-in, the cut-off of attendees, the process of determining numbers of delegates and the submission of paperwork necessary to complete this democratic process. It’s guaranteed to be easier than it was four years ago!
Temporary Precinct Chairs are still needed, and it’s crucial they attend at least one of these trainings.
Volunteers are also needed for daily caucus outreach, which includes phone calls or knocking on doors to make sure all Democrats in Washoe County know about the caucus.
For more information on how you can get involved in this first step to getting the President re-elected, contact Katie, at 323-8683, or kwilson@nvdems.com.
REID STATEMENT ON PAYROLL TAX CUT VOTES AND HOUSE REPUBLICAN PLAN
Nevada Senator Harry Reid released the following statement after Senate Republicans voted today against giving a tax cut to middle-class families and asking millionaires to pay their fair share:
“Republicans showed yet again that they are more interested in passing tax cuts for millionaires than tax cuts for the middle class.
Senate Republicans rejected two proposals to give middle-class families a tax cut. And House Republican leaders had to entice their members into supporting their proposal by weighing it down with a laundry list of policies whose sole purpose are scoring points against President Obama.
“House Republicans’ bill is a partisan joke that has no chance of passing the Senate, but middle-class families facing a thousand-dollar tax hike on January 1st are not laughing.
Instead of playing political games, Congress should work to find common ground. In the days ahead, I intend to do exactly that.”
