WashoeDEMS This Week July 27, 2011
Pam duPré Returns as Executive Director
Pam duPré, a 25-year Washoe County resident, has been named Executive Director of the WashoeDEMS, effective Aug. 1. This is her second stint as WashoeDEMS ED, inasmuch as she served in this capacity from 2003 to 2006.
“I look forward to working once again with the dedicated Party volunteers to continue building interest and involvement in Party activities,” duPré said.
“Together, we will spread the word about how Democratic Party principles support strong working families, a good education for everyone, access to healthcare and civic freedom,” duPré added.
After duPré’s tenure as Washoe DEMS ED, she worked as the political director for Hillary Clinton in Nevada. She also covered the 2009 Nevada Legislature for KUNR Radio, and has spent the last two years as Public Information Officer for Nevada Secretary of State Ross Miller.
“We have a lot of work to do to elect Democrats to offices at all levels,” said duPré, “and to rebuild a solid financial foundation for the WashoeDEMS. I’ll need all your help!”
Chair Dorie Guy said, “We welcome Pam back to the WashoeDEMS, and we are certain that, with her many statewide contacts with political figures and the media, our Party will achieve high esteem and exposure.”

Kate Marshall Will Protect Medicare, Social Security
In her campaign to represent Congressional District 2, State Treasurer Kate Marshall has emphasized her determination to protect Medicare and Social Security, now under attack from Republican plans to reduce the deficit. She also has noted her success in passing a jobs bill during the recent legislative session.
The state will hold a special election on September 13 to fill the seat vacated by Dean Heller.
As another example of her commitment to leadership and service to Nevadans, Marshall can cite the $32.8 million in unclaimed property that Nevadans received during the fiscal year that ended June 30. Thanks to Marshall and the Unclaimed Property Division, that amount sets a record, surpassing the $25.3 million returned in 2009. Marshall partly credits a new fast-track automated system for paying claims of less than $2,500.

DWWC Endorses Kate Marshall for CD 2
We are writing to ask for your support for the Democratic candidate Kate Marshall. As our state treasurer, she knows firsthand what this state and this country need for us to move forward in these complex economic times. Kate has worked with each legislative session since 2007 to keep Nevada thriving. She has demonstrated her financial skills by finding much needed monies for the state of Nevada during the 2009 session.
Kate is a hardworking woman who comes from humble beginnings and understands how hard it is to fight every day to achieve your dreams. She worked her way through college and law school, earning top grades. Kate lives the American Dream and wants to help others achieve it, too.
Kate Marshall wants to get people back to work because she understands how the unemployed affect the overall economy. Unemployed citizens have no disposable income, and they struggle to feed their families and keep a roof over their heads. Kate wants to help our children get a good education, which will help them prosper, bringing prosperity to Nevada and our country.
Another concern to Kate Marshall is our senior citizens. She wants to make sure that our seniors are taken care of, and she wants to save Social Security and Medicare for all generations. Kate feels the people who have paid into Social Security have earned the right to collect their investment.
In addition to her hard work and dedication to this state and its people, Kate is a mother of two teenage daughters and has worked to give them all the opportunities she herself enjoyed.
If you would like more information about Kate Marshall, you can go to her Web page at www.marshallfornevada.com. If you would like to volunteer, you can call 775-358-1346 or you can e-mail her office at info@katefornevada.com.
We truly hope all of you vote for Kate Marshall. Let us get her elected for Congressional District 2.
Thank You from the Executive Board of the Democratic Women of Washoe County.
Kate Marshall Wins Support of EMILY’s List
EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for
women in politics, has endorsed Kate Marshall for the CD 2 seat. “In this competitive election, Kate is the only candidate looking out for women and families in Nevada,” said Stephanie Schriock, President of EMILY’s List. “She’ll fight against the Republican war on women in Washington and bring some much needed common sense to the House of Representatives.”
In pursuing its mission of recruiting and supporting women candidates, EMILY’s List helps them build strong campaigns and mobilizes women voters to turn out and vote.

Dinner Honors WashoeDEMS Volunteers
Every autumn the WashoeDEMS hold the Virginia Demmler Honor Roll dinner to honor volunteers and others who have contributed to the Democratic Party of Washoe County’s success.
The dinner commemorates the late Virginia Demmler, a lifelong activist whose leadership helped the Democratic Party of Washoe County achieve its success.
Virginia grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology. In 1982 she moved to Reno, where she worked as an office manager for the United Mining Company. Virginia became involved in the local Democratic Party and rose to WashoeDEMS chair and executive director. She also served on the staff of former United States Senator Richard Bryan.
Arrangements still are in progress for this year’s Demmler dinner, so watch this newsletter for an announcement of the honorees, the guest speaker and the date of the dinner.
