Kate Marshall Seeks CD2 House Seat
Congressional District 2 will hold a special election on September 13, to pick a representative to fill the seat left vacant by Dean Heller’s appointment to the U. S. Senate.
As of this writing, State Treasurer Kate Marshall and former University Regent Nancy Price have declared their candidacies for CD 2.
WashoeDEMS This Week will give each candidate an opportunity to introduce herself and state her position and qualifications. The Kate Marshall campaign provided the following statement.
Kate Marshall knows the value of a dollar. Growing up, Kate’s family moved often, for when the lights went out and the phone went dead, it was time for her family to move again. But at a young age, Kate knew that through hard work, determination and a good education, she could grow up to be whatever she wanted to be. Kate worked her way through high school, college and law school, working in book stores and the library to get by.
As the Senior Deputy Attorney General for Nevada, Kate fought hard to prevent price gouging at the gas pump and worked to strengthen small businesses, saving small town grocery stores across Nevada.
Kate was elected Nevada State Treasurer in 2006, and re-elected in 2010. As Treasurer, she has been credited with improving and implementing programs that have saved millions in taxpayer dollars, reducing spending by making government more efficient, and identifying innovative methods for increasing economic development for Nevada.
“Congress needs to put Nevada families first,” Kate says. ”I’ll work every day to bring jobs to northern Nevada, control runaway spending and make government perform for Nevadans and not special interests. That’s what I have done in Carson, and that’s what I’ll do in Washington.”

Update on CD 2 Special Election, Sept. 13
* Note Change of Venue for State Central Committee Meeting!
Chris Wicker, WashoeDEMS Chair Emeritus, reported
that under the current ruling of the District Court in Carson City, the Nevada State Democratic Party’s Central Committee will meet to nominate one Democratic candidate for CD 2. That meeting is set for Saturday, June 25, in Reno, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The Nevada Democratic Party filed a notice of appeal of that ruling to the Nevada Supreme Court. It is expected the court will expedite the process and render a decision prior to the date required for printing of ballots by the Secretary of State’s office. July 8 has been announced as the date the Secretary of State releases the official list of candidates for the ballot.
As of June 1, the Nevada Supreme Court asked the state political parties and the Secretary of State to address whether the September special election could be rescheduled to allow the Court more time to research.
If the Supreme Court overturns the District Court’s ruling, the original plan for this election announced by the Secretary of State (with no limit on numbers of candidates) would be followed.
During the next few weeks, WashoeDEMS This Week will give each candidate who has officially filed an opportunity to introduce themselves and state their position and qualifications.
If you are interested in applying for the Executive Director position, please send your resume and cover letter to Rudy Viola, Chairman of the Executive Director Search Committee, darksun010@aol.com. As of June 1, he is still accepting applications.

U.S. Senate Candidate Shelley Berkley Visits Reno
Southern Nevada Congresswoman Shelley Berkley revved up her U.S. Senate race against Dean Heller with a talk to about 40 of the WashoeDEMS faithful at Headquarters, May 28.
“You have done a remarkable job with your Party,” she told the DEMS, “You got Harry Reid elected. And, who would have thought President Obama would win Nevada by 12 percent!”
Berkley continued, “You have the ‘boots on the ground’ to put us over the top. This is the biggest Senate race in the country, and control of the Senate may very well depend on Nevada. We have to keep 55 percent of Clark County and win Washoe County.”
Berkley slammed Heller’s votes in these essential areas: health care; jobs and the economy; and renewable energy. She said Heller is trying to balance the budget on the backs of the most vulnerable among us -- students, the poor and the elderly -- while providing tax breaks and subsidies for big oil companies who contribute to his campaigns.
“I’m one of the hardest working individuals in Congress,” said Berkley, a Ways and Means Committee member, who was the first in her family to go to college. Her grandparents immigrated from Nazi Germany and didn’t speak English when they arrived.
She ended her talk on a high note, saying our best days are ahead of us, but we have serious challenges to overcome in the meantime.
