State Senator Sheila Leslie will wrap up the recent Nevada State Legislature session with members of the local Democratic Party of Washoe County. The event is sponsored by the Truckee Meadows Democratic Alliance (TMDA), an affiliate of the WashoeDEMS.
· What: Legislative Wrap-up · When: Wednesday, June 15, 7 to 9 p.m. · Where: WashoeDEMS Headquarters, 1465 Terminal Way, Suite 1, Reno. · Contact: Bob McGowan, 775.240.0660, mcgowanrobert@sbcglobal.net “We are thrilled to have Senator Leslie share her insights into the recently completed Legislative session and beyond,” Robert McGowan, TMDA Chair, said. “She is a great speaker, and will tell us what we accomplished in the session, as well as what we need to do in the future.” Leslie was Senate Assistant Majority Whip and chair of the Senate Revenue Committee in the recent session. She was elected to the Senate from Washoe District 1 in 2010, after serving in the Assembly since 1999, representing District 27 (central/southwest Reno). Leslie is Specialty Courts Coordinator for the 2nd Judicial District Court, and has formerly held positions in the Children’s Cabinet and other human services organizations. She served in the Peace Corp, and has a master’s degree in Spanish Languages/Literature from the University of Nevada, Reno. She has received more than a dozen awards for her service to families and children in Washoe County. Message from the WCDP Chair, Dorie Guy I hope everyone is enjoying the (finally) warm weather and completing the plans you made for summer. We are busy here in the office, cleaning and painting and making it a nicer place for all of us to enjoy, thanks to some wonderful volunteers taking care of the painting and cleaning. As some of you know I was on vacation last month and after I left our ED resigned. I was so concerned about what was happening here, I almost flew home from Holland. As it turned out, there was no worry. Your Eboard pitched in and took care of everything, manning the office, answering the phone and doing what was needed and necessary. I wanted to let everyone know about the State Central Committee meeting on Saturday, June 25th. The meeting was originally schedule in Southern Nevada, but because of the order by the District Court, the State Party decided to have it here, due to the fact most all of CD2 is in Northern Nevada. Our Secretary of State Ross Miller originally ruled that the CD2 election would be a "free for all" and anyone who decided to become a candidate could run. The state Republican Party sued Miller in District court asserting that the law required each major party to select a single candidate to run as a Democrat or Republican. The District Judge sided with the Republicans and ordered that the state central committee of each party had to nominate one candidate by June 30 to run in the September election. The Secretary of State and the state Democratic Party, who intervened in the case, appealed the decision to the State Supreme Court and we are waiting for their decision. Their decision is not expected until well after our meeting on the 25th. If and when the decision comes down from the Supreme Court it could change the dynamics all over again if the District Court is reversed. If you are a member of the Nevada State Central Committee it's important that you attend that meeting. You will have the opportunity to vote for that candidate. Proxies will not be accepted for the vote. You must be present to vote. If you are a member and no longer interested in being such will you please call the office and let me know so that we can add someone who wants to be on the list. I can't express strong enough the commitment needed to be a member in attending the State meetings. If you feel you can no longer commit, please let me know. We presently have our allotted number and there is a waiting list. We also have an opening for a Washoe Dem to become a member of the State Executive Board. This involved attending the State Executive meetings and having a vote. If you are interested there will be forms available in our office and we will have a vote on a new member at our July County meeting. That's my message for this time. I hope to send a message once a month. We have a great newsletter and if you would like to add something about our Democratic community, please let us know. Thank you for taking the time to read this, It is important!! Dorie Guy, WCDP Chair
