State Central Committee picks Kate Marshall for CD 2
At the Nevada State Democratic Party Central Committee meeting on Saturday, June 25, the committee chose State Treasurer Kate Marshall to be their nominee in the special election for Congressional District 2. Marshall won on the first ballot by nearly unanimous consent.
Marshall, who has served Nevada as State Treasurer since 2006, has been successfully elected statewide twice. She has been credited widely for saving taxpayer money by uncovering and eliminating no bid contracts and off-the-books accounts, which were draining the state’s economy. Marshall navigated Nevada through the worst economic recession since the Great Depression and made the state a profit in every quarter of every year that she has served as Treasurer.
“I am honored to receive this nomination. Nevadans deserve a voice in Congress that will fight for middle class families, and that’s what I intend to do. I’ll work every day to create jobs in northern Nevada and win the fight to control runaway spending in Washington,” said Marshall.
Before being elected Treasurer, Marshall served in the U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division, where she received the Antitrust Division’s Outstanding Contribution Award, the last person to receive that award. Marshall then served as the Senior Deputy Attorney General for Nevada, working to prevent price gouging at the gas pump and protecting Nevada small businesses.
Marshall, a mother of two daughters, Anna and Molly, has lived in Reno since 1997.

Sylvester Kelly, Activist for Workers, Retirees
Sylvester Kelley died on Monday, June 13. He was 87. Kelley was a decorated World War II veteran who devoted his working life to Sierra Pacific Power and, after retirement, fought the company to defend medical benefits for all retirees.
Kelley was a 63-year member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1245/AFL-CIO. He returned from World War II with a Purple Heart and a finger mangled by German shrapnel. When he sought work at Sierra Pacific Power, the company would not hire him because his bent finger would not fit into a company safety glove.
Kelley had the finger amputated in order to go to work for the utility and went on to become a highly-respected foreman, troubleman and a leader in IBEW Local 1245's Reno unit in the 1950's.
In 2010 Kelley became heavily involved in the union's campaign to defend retiree medical benefits at the statewide utility. He was featured in full-page newspapers ads as well as 60-second television spots that told his compelling story of service and sacrifice.
Local 1245 has represented workers at NV Energy since 1945. Overall, the union represents roughly 20,000 energy workers in Nevada and California.
