Joan KrusePlease Welcome Joan Kruse to the DPWC Executive Board

The DPWC has appointed long-time Democratic volunteer Joan Kruse to fill the position of 2nd vice chair on the Executive Board.

Joan is a former Washoe County Chair and veteran fundraiser.  She currently serves as an at-large member of the Nevada State Democratic Party Executive Board.

Joan was a member of Governor Bob Miller’s team during his term in Carson City and was instrumental in carrying Washoe County for Richard Bryan in his first Senate race.   She has served as a member of the Fundraising and Events Committee for many years.

Pledge to Caucus 2012A Message for All 2008 Caucus Temporary Chairs!
From Kate Wilson, Regional Caucus Director, NSDP

As a 2008 Caucus Temporary Chair, you know how rewarding and occasionally challenging the caucus can be! I had an amazing time being a Temporary Chair in 2008, but, in hindsight, there were a few things I would have changed.

That being said, I have decided to host a 2008 Temporary Chair Question and Answer meeting for you to discuss our successes in 2008, and ways we can improve. The 2012 Caucus organizers want to pick your brain in hopes of making the 2012 Caucus more efficient and enjoyable for the volunteers who help run them. You know better than anyone the challenges we faced and we want your opinion on how to make 2012 a successful caucus year. Even if you will not be able to serve as a 2012 Caucus Temporary Chair we still urge you to attend.

Who: All 2008 Caucus Temporary Chairs (and anyone else who helped run their caucus)

Where: Washoe County Democratic Headquarters

When: Thursday, October 6th
Time: 6:00-7:00pm

Why: We want to know how we can make the caucus better!

I hope to see you all there. If you have any questions or concerns please contact me at kwilson@nvdems.com.

Economic Myths Busted at Dems MeetingDr. Elliott Parker

The head of the UNR Economics Department busted commonly-held myths about government intervention and economic policies during a talk before a standing-room only crowd of WashoeDEMS at the Oct. 4 Central Committee meeting.

“We’re in a trough right now with a slow recovery,” summarized Dr. Elliott Parker, who has been invited once again to the U.S. Senate to brief senators on economic policy.

Myth #1: This is a normal recession that government intervention made worse. “This was actually a depression averted,” Parker pointed out, adding, “Government may not have done enough!”

Myth #2: Government tried fiscal policy to stimulate the economy. “The problem here,” said Parker, “was that local budgets were not spending, which canceled out what the federal government tried to do.”

Myth #3: The budget deficit resulted primarily from increased government spending. Parker responded that the fall in tax revenue was due to the Bush Administration’s policies of lowering taxes on the rich.

Myth #4: Growth of the federal debt is unprecedented, at least in peacetime. Parker pointed out that (former Fed Chief) Alan Greenspan had advised the government not to pay off the national debt.

Myth #5: Borrowing is bad. “On the contrary,” said Parker, “borrowing is not a bad idea, but borrowing should not be considered in good times!”

Parker commented that hyper-partisanship in politics is ruining the country. Ending on an “up” note, however, Parker did say that business investments are recovering and exports are growing. Right now what we need is confidence.

Pizza & Paint

It’s time!!!  The old walls down at HQ are in need of a fresh coat of paint – BLUE paint – as we near the one-year countdown to the 2012 General Election.

We are asking our fellow Democrats to help by donating $25 to buy a gallon of paint or a couple of large pizzas for our volunteer painters…we’ll need a lot of both!

You can make a convenient online contribution here or send us a check at DPWC, 1465 Terminal Way, #1, Reno, NV  89502.  And thanks for helping us turn HQ, and Washoe County, BLUE!

Help Us Honor Our Brave Veterans

Please mark your calendars to join the Democratic Party of Washoe County, its affiliates, Nevada State Democratic Party, and Organizing for America in representing the Party in the City of Reno Veteran's Day Parade Friday, Nov. 11.  The theme this year is "Honoring Women in the Military."

Every day Americans enlist to serve in our all-volunteer forces, and when they do, as Senator Harry Reid has said, the rest of us make an implicit agreement with those men and women that we will never forget the service they have given nor will we fail to provide the benefits they have earned.

We look forward to a big turnout of Democrats on Veteran's Day.  Watch this newsletter for more details.
